Its coral reefs stretch along the coast, forming natural pools of crystal-clear water — home to sea turtles, corals, starfish and hundreds of species. On land, the Atlantic Forest shelters hummingbirds, armadillos and a biodiversity that few islands in the world still preserve intact.
With only 3,000 inhabitants, the island moves on foot, by boat or tractor. The only access is by sea. And that changes everything.
The communities of Boipeba are quilombola — descendants of enslaved Africans who built their freedom here, on a remote island, as an act of resistance and self-love. Their story reminds us that freedom is not found — it is built.
The community of Boipeba stands out for its peaceful way of life, its deep bond with artisanal fishing and its legendary hospitality. Ancestral celebrations — samba, capoeira, festivals passed down through generations — fill the island with a quiet, living joy. A calm place, but deeply alive, inhabited by people who love their island profoundly.
